POLICY RESOURCES

Early Intervention in Psychosis has been prominent within contemporary policy drivers for Mental Health modernisation.  It has enjoyed a sustained policy platform becoming first established within the National Service Framework for Mental Health (1999) and remains prominent within the latest New Horizons consensus.

  • New Horizons (2010) extends and further develops the EI paradigm. Particular attention is drawn to the importance of improving the 'transition' experience of young people between CAMHS and Adult Mental Health Services.
  • Updated NICE guidance (CG82) for schizophrenia 2009 reviews the treatment evidence base.   The Healthcare Commission monitosr adherence.
  • NHS Contract for Mental Health and Learning Disabilities includes as a priority 'comprehensive coverage of the population by early intervention services for psychosis' and requires commissioners to account for why they are not providing a service that meets the national standards.  It is a requirement that the number of cases/new cases accepted by early intervention services are reported centrally through 'Omnibus.'
  • Monitor requires Foundation Trusts to prioritise the provision of EIP services - requiring the ongoing meeting of agreed caseload targets.
