The Early Intervention in Psychosis IRIS Network continues to support the promotion of EI in psychosis. As an ongoing legacy of the National EI Programme (2004-2010) this network brings together elected EI regional leads to ensure the ongoing sharing of issues and solutions. This network maintains a long history of collaboration with IRIS, one of the driving
forces behind the promotion of EI in England and beyond.

Coalition health minister values early intervention in psychosis on radio 4's All in the Mind programme
‘The evidence is pretty compelling that by
intervening
early you can make a real difference; you can avoid someone being
admitted into
acute hospital care so this is really a no brainer. It makes sense to
invest in
early interventions to go back upstream and make sure we prevent these
sorts of
problems’.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
“I have seen how much progress early intervention teams have made, how innovative they have been, and the impact they are having. I now believe that early intervention will be the most important and far reaching reform of the NSF era. Crisis resolution has had the most immediate effect but I think early intervention will have the greatest effect on people’s lives."
Professor Louis Appleby, National Director for Mental Health October 10th 2008 Policies and Practice for Europe (DH / WHO Europe conference attended by 35 European Countries)
“My experience with new service users, their carers and families, suggests that we have hugely underestimated the outcomes of these interventions which to me, radically alter the prospects for individuals and suggest potential benefits which may extend over a lifetime. Of course it is too early to make such claims and we need longitudinal data to support such an assertion, but I am nonetheless convinced that the approach, focus and interventions offer much more than we ever could in the past. The cost benefit case is already made, and the potential could revolutionize our system of Mental Healthcare”
Erville Millar, Chief Executive, Kent & Medway Partnership NHS Trust
EARLY INTERVENTION IN ENGLAND: THE STORY SO FAR.
Westminster Central Hall Feb 4th 2010 More than 300 people gather to celebrate ten years of working together to establish EI services in England.
The event marked the conclusion of the National EI Programme. From its origins in 2004 this programme has played an important role in supporting the NSF ambition to develop EI services. The event was an opportunity to take stock and consider how to sustain the momentum from the closure of this programme.

Feedback from the event strongly endorsed the networking functions of the National EI Programme. Consequently the regional EI leads have decided to continue to meet quarterly within an ongoing national EI IRIS network.
